Today, October 1, 2013, as usual Kebayoran club had a great meeting. Rodney is our new member, took the lead as Toastmaster of the meeting.
He chose the theme “Ethics in business”. As new comer, Rodney prepared the
theme and also used power point slides to show some description and he was
able to explain it very well. A big step had been made by Rodney, he learnt how
to handle the meeting. He could relate the speakers’ topic with his comments.
Good job Rodney!
The saying from Lao Tzu
said “ The
journey of a thousand miles begins with one step” And it was so true in
Kebayoran club that our new members started their journey in toastmaster by
taking a big step.
Another new member, Hanna Huang, took role as General Evaluator, Fazila as “Ah
counter”, and Edward as “Grammarian”. Gamar, Mia and Ira supported the evaluation team by taking the roles as Timer, Word of the Counter and Ballot Counter respectively.
For Hanna, being General Evaluator for the first time, she was able to give a total evaluation, pointed out the best part of the meeting and gave useful inputs for meeting improvement.
Fazila did a great job as Ah Counter. Besides, the role has helped her reduce her own “ah… ehm…” too. She got the benefit of being a good listener.
Edward didn’t find any difficulty to be the Grammarian because English is his
first language. He took notes for beautiful phases. Word of the Day chosen was "Extraordinary" and it was widely used by most of the speakers during the meeting. As “WoD” counter, Mia successfully counted how many people mentioned the WoD. Gamar
and Ira knew their duties and performed well as Timer and ballot counter.
Now we wanted to focus on the speakers: we had three prepared
speakers. First was Chaya. She is the newcomer to the club. She
delivered her basic manual project number 2 “Organize your speech”. She opened
her speech by using quotations. She managed to use her body language, vocal
variety and had a good closing. Her topic was about “The Mind Power”.
The second speaker was Vina, one of our loyal members. Today, she delivered the project number five "Your Body Speaks" from CC manual with title "Wealth is Health". Vina just redid her basic manual so she knew
very well the project’s objection. Vina brought us to the exercise from Yoga,
Pilates, until walking with barefoot. The great thing about Toastmasters
sometimes we could learn one or two terms from other language such as Wan Shi Ru Yi which means it's always difficult at the beginning, and Jian Kang Di Yi which means health is number one.
Vina knew that in Toastmasters the journey would never end, so she
put some effort to redo again the basic manual even though she is already in the
advanced level. It was a great motivation for the new members to continue their
journey in Toastmasters as Vina did today. Great job Vina!
Our third speaker was Edward with his speech “The art
of DJ-ing”. This was his basic manual project number four on “how to say it”. He
started his speech with a question “Who like dancing?” The audience started to
expect that there would be a dancing in that speech. Edward played some music from
his laptop and he also explained what DJ-ing was. It was fun to hear music
in the middle of the meeting.
Very competent evaluators evaluated the speakers. Debbie
evaluated Chaya, and she said that Chaya did very well with body language and
others thing but she also pointed that Chaya needed to slowdown a little bit.
Kevin evaluated Vina, he used a great decription about Vina’s
communication skills. He emphasized that Vina had a “polished skills”, and her
speech was definitely solid. However he still could give great inputs, such as
Vina could use yoga movement for the closing.
Edward was evaluated by Elly today. Elly mentioned about
Edward’s attention to the audience. As usual Elly put some humor into her
evaluation. It created smooth and easy for the audience to follow her
evaluation. No wonder she got the best evaluator.
Last but not least, we had Robert our new member took a role
as “table topic master” he prepared the questions and he explained his duty
clearly to the audience, he invited guests to join the session. He had four
table topic speakers, they were: Fazila, Lina, Inneke (guest) and Abid (guest).
Kebayoran club is a place for everyone who likes to improve
their communication skills and leadership skills. We always welcome all of you
to join and have fun with us.
